Restoring Your Tooth’s Shape and Function
Dental crowns are a versatile solution to restore teeth that are broken, worn, weak, or cosmetically imperfect. They protect your natural teeth while improving appearance and function.
What Are Dental Crowns Made From?
At Dr. Yip’s Office, we use porcelain crowns for their strength, durability, and natural appearance. Porcelain matches your tooth color more accurately than other materials and is an excellent choice for patients with metal allergies.
How Long Do Crowns Last?
With proper care, crowns can last 5–15 years. To extend their lifespan:
- Avoid chewing ice or other hard objects
- Do not use teeth to open packages
- Manage teeth grinding or clenching
- Maintain regular dental cleanings and exams
- Do not use your teeth as tools (e.g. opening packs/bottles, biting into string/thread/fishing line, nail biting, etc.)
- Manage teeth grinding and clenching with behavior modification, stress release, fabrication of a custom occlusal guard and/or day guard
When Crowns Are Recommended
Crowns are commonly used to:
- Cover a dental implant
- Protect a broken, cracked, or worn tooth
- Restore severely discolored or misshapen teeth
- Strengthen a weak tooth or hold cracked parts together
- Restore a tooth after root canal therapy
- Anchor a dental bridge
